Scalp micropigmentation is simply explained as a medical grade cosmetic, non surgical procedure utilizing one or more very fine needles to deposit colored pigment or ink into the outer layer of the epidermis on the scalp of the subject to appear as if a healthy hair follicle exists in a normal growth pattern. Performed properly it is a permanent solution, creating the illusion of hair.
Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, is an alternative to traditional hair loss solutions like hair transplant surgery, hair systems, shake-on concealers, Minoxidil and Propecia. Scalp micropigmentation is the fastest growing solution for male and female hair loss in recent history. It is non-invasive, has universal appeal and is permanent. Furthermore, it remains the only permanent hair loss fix to offer instantaneous, guaranteed results.
Scalp micropigmentation is the process of replicating the appearance of shaven hair, by introducing thousands of tiny pigment deposits into the epidermis of the scalp. When placed by a skilled technician, the recipient appears as if they have a full head of hair, shaved to a very short length.
Scalp micropigmentation is commonly used to hide general balding and hairline recession, often referred to as pattern or genetic hair loss. It can be also used to conceal hair transplant scars or blemishes as a result of trauma to the head, as well as covering up hair loss relating to alopecia conditions.
> Each treatment session usually takes 2-3 hours, but time does vary depending on individual requirements. Once the pigments are deposited, the skin needs to recover. A recovery period of 5-7 days is required between sessions, so that the micro-wounds created during the procedure may heal. Most clients need 2-4 sessions for their procedure to be considered complete.
Carbon based pigments fade slowly over time. Whilst the treatment is likely to remain visible for 10 years or more, regular top-ups are needed to maintain an effective illusion. Most clients find they need top-ups every 3-5 years. For maximum longevity, it is important to keep the scalp in a good condition. Clients should be advised to cleanse and moisturise their scalp daily, take adequate precautions in the sun and avoid topical products that contain alcohol.
Scalp micropigmentation in general has very few side effects and does not tend to cause adverse reactions. This is because SMP is a cosmedic cover-up, not a drug or surgery based ‘cure’. This makes a full medical diagnosis unnecessary in most cases, although clients should seek medical advice if they are aware of any underlying conditions that may be causing their hair loss.
No one wants to lose their hair, but the simple truth is that by the time you reach your 40s you will probably have significantly less hair than you did in your teens.
Everyone experiences some type of hair loss as they age, but not all thinning is the same. While only a doctor can diagnose the cause of your hair loss, I’ve compiled a list of the different types that both men and women face as a jumping off point for anyone interested in some of the causes and cures of baldness.
Androgenic alopecia, also known as pattern or genetic hair loss, is the most common cause of baldness and affects 70 percent of men and 40 percent of women. In men, this type of hair loss is usually characterised by a receding hair line, loss in the crown or “bald spot” or general thinning hair throughout the top of the head.
Men generally begin to experience androgenic alopecia in their early 20s, although it can take years before becoming noticeable. Women, on the other hand, usually keep their hairlines but beginning in the late 30s to 40s hair gradually thins throughout the entire scalp.
Telogen effluvium is the second most common cause of hair loss and is especially common in women. It appears as shedding or diffuse thinning over the scalp. This type of hair loss can be very unpredictable and could be related to several causes, including hormonal imbalance. It can also happen after giving birth or possibly be triggered by high stress. It’s typically not permanent, and hair often grows back once stress decreases or hormones regain a healthy balance.
Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder in the skin that causes hair loss. This condition usually starts with one or more bald circles on the scalp. These circles can move, multiply, grow, or go into remission for months or even years. In severe cases, alopecia can progress and cause total hair loss.
Hair loss may have another cause such as an underactive thyroid or medication.
How the client chooses to treat their hair loss depends on the cause. It also depends on their attitude towards hair loss. They may decide that they need treatment, or they may not be worried about thinning hair or baldness.
If hair loss is caused by something that won’t last or can be treated, the client’s hair is likely to grow back. For example, if an underactive thyroid is causing the problem, taking thyroid medicine may help. And most hair lost during chemotherapy will grow back after the treatment ends.
Hair loss that runs in the family can be treated with drugs such as propecia or minoxidil, or remedied with hair transplant surgery. Some people choose to wear hairpieces. Finding different ways of styling the hair, like dyeing or combing, also can help in the short term.
When hair loss is inherited, the hair won’t grow back naturally. Treatment can help some hair grow back and prevent more from falling out, but the client won’t get all their hair back. And treatment doesn’t work for everyone.
Of course, scalp micropigmentation is increasingly used, not to prevent hair loss, but to hide its effects
